CANADIAN CITIZENS GETTING MARRIED IN ITALY

  1. Canadian citizens getting married in Italy are required to present to Italian authorities a sworn declaration called NULLA OSTA (also known as Certificate of non impediment).
  2. The Canadian Government does not issue a Nulla Osta, however the Canadian Consulate in Rome prepares a declaration containing the relevant information needed by the Italian authorities.
  3. To obtain this declaration you must first set up an appointment with the Canadian Authorities in Rome and swear an affidavit to the effect that there is no impediment to the proposed marriage.
  4. The affidavit can be sworn in front of a notary public in Canada or a consular official at the Consulate.
  5. If the affidavit is made at the Canadian Consulate, the applicant should fill out the appropriate form and bring and present the following documents:
    • Valid Canadian passport;
    • Proof of Canadian citizenship (Canadian birth certificate or Certificate of Canadian Citizenship;
    • Document issued by the competent Vital Statistics authorities in Canada confirming that no registration of marriage appears in their records (if obtainable);

You do not have to go to the Canadian Consulate in Italy but you could send the documents through correspondence using a reliable courier to Rome:
